Ms. dance’s kindergarten class visiting the library today! Lots of independent reading about sharks, dinosaurs, and birds. Plus! We read Bear Island as a group by author & Caldecott medalist, Matthew Cordell.Kindergarteners visited the library today to learn about shapes. We read Round is a Tortilla by author Rosanne Greenfield Thong. We talked about how the author used shapes to form the story. Students pointed out shapes as we read and then used shapes to create their own story. Students were quizzed on different shapes and encouraged to look for shapes they see out in the world.
Morning broadcast is produced in the school library, and students are always so excited to be on air to share our school news. They learn great communication skills and all the components that go into producing the news. It's the best for reading, speaking, listening, and we hope this school year, it will include writing, too!
Stop by and check out this new chapter book series: Definitely Dominguita. "This chapter book series features a young Cuban American girl who tries to find adventure based on the classics she reads with her beloved Abuela." -Booksource
Students requested Scooby Doo and Fractured Fairy Tale books last school year, and they finally arrived! These book displays didn't stay full for long. Both series are very popular among our kids. It's so exciting to see our students excited about books. Many times, we see them jump up and down and scream, "Yes!", its here! It's the BEST feeling!
We had to get creative in the Fair Oaks Library with shelving. We added so many new books to our shelves to start the school year, and we didn't have enough shelving for book displays. We tiered tables to create these book displays and place it right in front of the library doors to catch the attention of our students. It worked!
A new chapter book and graphic novel series was added to the school library shelves. The Wing of Fire books are hugely popular with our students. So much so, it's hard to get the students to return them! High interest books are a must to gain student interest in reading. Just remember, students, to return your books by the due date so your peers have an opportunity to read and enjoy, too.
New this year to our non-fiction section is books about the military, gaming, solar system, dinosaurs, and sharks. All books were requested by our Fair Oaks students through our book suggestion program in the library. |
