All are Welcome1st grade library orientations have been completed in the school library, and we learned a lot about these four essential vocabulary words: Welcome, Diversity, Kindness, and Include by reading the book "All are Welcome" by author Alexandra Penfold and Illustrator Suzanne Kaufman. To promote fresh air, wellness and exercise, and to provide all Fair Oaks students and community members the opportunity to read the story, first graders participated in an outdoor "Story Walk" created by Mrs. Quintana and media paraprofessional, Ms. Christmas. As Mrs. Quintana read the book, students strolled along the front sidewalk taking in the words and illustrations of the book. As we read, we had deeper discussions about how we make everyone feel welcome in the school library and at Fair Oaks Elementary while focusing on our four essential vocabulary words to make real world connections.
After the Story Walk, students learned how to care for library books and how to do self-check out and return of library books at the circulation desk. They also participated in completing a fun "This is Me" self-portrait drawing which will be displayed in the library so students see themselves as part of our library and school community. I am so proud of our 1st graders, and Ms. Christmas and we look forward to seeing each of them in the school library. Our students feel so empowered to read and learn. Mrs. Quintana

Book Creator App=Staff Library Resource Book
Fair Oaks Staff,
In our August 18, 2021 staff meeting, Mrs. Quintana shared this book created in the app, Book Creator, filled with library resources for staff. The link was shared in the chat during the Teams meeting, but I have had requests to post it here on the Fair Oaks Library website. Thank you to everyone for your kind comments about the resource book! I will be adding information as the need arises, but please use it to find answers to any questions you may have about the library. If you have any suggestions for content to add to the resource book, feel free to email me! Enjoy! School Library UpdatesWe are in the 3rd week of school already, and there is a lot of updates taking place in the Fair Oaks School Library. The updates have included moving books to new shelving locations, including shelving fiction books by genre, moving non-fiction to a new and visible location, and weeding old, old, library books. I was so surprised to see books dated back to when I was in elementary! Yes! Our students deserve new books, and it is our goal this year to work on our library book collection. I am also excited to share that we will be re-painting the school library in the fall. Once this takes place, we will be able to start creating flexible learning spaces for all students. I plan to create two distinct reading and learning spaces for K-2 and 3-5 and a K-5 library commons area. The whole process will take the entire school year, and we are excited about the transformation! |
